COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gill’s Goals Get UCI Past USC in Water Polo

Steve Gill’s three fourth-quarter goals broke a tie and gave UC Irvine a 9-6 victory over USC Saturday in the quarterfinals of the 49er Invitational water polo tournament in Long Beach. Gill finished with a game-high six goals.
The Anteaters (15-3) will face Stanford (10-8), an 8-7 winner over UCLA, in a semifinal at 11:30 a.m. today at Belmont Plaza Pool. Irvine beat the Cardinal, 12-9, Sept. 27. Top-ranked California, the defending NCAA champion, will meet Pepperdine in the other semifinal at 10:20 a.m.
Irvine began the day by defeating Chaminade, 15-3, with Skylar Putman scoring four goals and Gill and Pablo Yrizar each adding three.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
UC Santa Barbara 3, UC Irvine 0--The Anteaters continued their futility against the Gauchos, losing for the 32nd time in the 34 meetings between the two teams. Santa Barbara (14-7, 9-4) needed 67 minutes to complete a 15-5, 15-1, 15-8 victory in front of 154 at Crawford Hall. Dana Chalais led Irvine (7-12, 2-9) with eight kills.
