FULLERTON — An unidentified man being taken to jail on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs died in a patrol car Saturday shortly after a struggle with police, authorities said.
Details of the arrest and his struggle with two officers were sketchy, Police Sgt. Hal Stevens said.
Police received a call at 5:50 p.m. that a man was behaving oddly in a hallway of the Days Inn motel at 1500 S. Raymond St., Stevens said.
Two responding officers found the man, who was described a being in his early 30s, behaving strangely, he said.
When the officers tried to arrest the man, he resisted, Stevens said, and a struggle started but police subdued him.
When the officers arrived at the Fullerton station, they discovered that the man was not breathing. Stevens said it appeared that the suspect “expired in the car.”
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday, he said.
