World IN BRIEF : CANADA : 13 Survive Plane Crash Near N. Pole

The three most-seriously injured survivors of a Canadian military plane crash near the North Pole arrived in Ottawa after spending two days in the wreckage of the aircraft. Five of the 18 people on the C-130 Hercules were killed in Wednesday’s crash, officials said. The weather cleared enough late Thursday night to permit six parachutists to reach the rocky, snow-covered site with medical aid, officials said. A ground search party also eventually reached the scene. Six of the 13 survivors were airlifted to a U.S. Air Force base in Thule, Greenland, on Friday. The C-130 was on a routine supply run from Thule to a Canadian military station at Alert, the world’s most northerly settlement, when it crashed about 12 miles short of the runway.
