Local NAACP Calls for Public Assault on Racism

Angered by the burning of a cross outside a Hawthorne automotive shop earlier this week, local officials of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People on Friday urged a public assault on racism.
“Ignorance lit that cross,” said Joann Johnson, president of the group’s Inglewood-South Bay chapter. “It’s long past time for this sort of thing to stop. It’s time for us to be at peace with each other.”
Two Hawthorne police officers found the cross burning against a chain-link fence outside Open Road Automotive on 139th Street shortly before 5 a.m. on Thursday.
