After winning the City Section 3-A Division girls’ volleyball championship Friday night at Cal State Northridge, perhaps Harbor City Narbonne High should consider changing its school nickname from the Gauchos to the Comeback Kids.
For the second week in a row, Narbonne came from behind, this time defeating defending champion Marshall, 8-15, 15-8, 15-8, 15-7.
In the 4-A final, Palisades won its fourth City title in a row, defeating Woodland Hills El Camino Real for the second consecutive year, 12-15, 15-4, 15-10, 15-0.
Wendy Hromadkaa led the Dolphins (16-2) with 31 kills and 21 assists, and Sarah Schroeder added 21 kills and 25 assists. El Camino Real finished 14-3.
The victory in the 3-A match did not surprise Narbonne Coach Jim Backstrom.
“It’s been like that all season,” he said. “We’ve always been like a second-half team.”
Senior middle blocker Yolanda Wright, who led the Gauchos with 10 kills, said she was not worried when Marshall scored 11 of the first 12 points to win the first game.
“Once we get the first game over, then we played,” she said.
The underhanded serving of Shaunna Aguet sparked Narbonne (16-2) in the final game. Aguet’s floaters accounted for two aces and nine service points to make the score 11-4.
