OUTLOOK
The Bruins should improve on last season’s record and finish in league standings with the return of all five starters including all-league guard Michelle Davenport (14 points per game). Bethel also has a pair of capable rebounders returning in Cindy Doyle (nine rebounds per game) and Yolanda Mendez (6.5 rebounds per game). Morales (who also coaches the boys’ team) says the Bruins will be physically strong defensively with a disciplined zone and strong off the defensive boards. Bethel would like to shoot for second place in league standings but will have to improve offensively. Morales would like to get more of his players involved in the offense and looking for their shots instead of overpassing the ball. Express League defending champion Gethsemane of Long Beach appears favored to repeat. Pioneer Baptist and Southeast Lutheran also are expected to be tough in league play.
