A small earthquake jiggled the Borrego Springs area Tuesday, the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena reported.
The temblor, which registered 3.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9:44 a.m. and was centered 16 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs, Caltech spokesman Robert Finn said.
The quake was near the San Jacinto Fault, but seismologists did not immediately know if that fault produced the temblor.
