OUTLOOK
After suffering through a disastrous 2-15 record last season, Santa Margarita could be the league’s surprise team this year. Carolyn Campbell, who coached at Mater Dei from 1981 to 1987, has returned to head coaching after an extended parental hiatus and hopes to bring some stability and respectability to a program that has been staggering since the school opened. The Lady Eagles hope to move up after finishing in the Angelus League cellar. Witte, an all-league forward, is the only returning starter. Three other returnees--Beattie, Cabrera, and Pichler--give Campbell more experience to build around. Campbell is looking to last season’s junior varsity for help, particularly from Nolan and Keane. Moss, a transfer from Palos Verdes, also figures to see considerable action. Overall team speed should enable the Lady Eagles to run the fast break and play man-to-man defense. Beattie has been the toughest on the boards in practice so far. Campbell plans to instill better discipline to improve attitude and self-confidence. The Lady Eagles may start slow but should be more competitive by the time league play starts. Campbell sees Mater Dei and Bishop Amat as the two top contenders in league.
