The City Council on Tuesday narrowly approved a $13,354 capital project to improve Memorial Park.
By a 3-2 vote, the council authorized combining a state grant of $4,072 with $9,282 in general fund and Community Redevelopment Agency money to replace playground equipment with a safer modular plastic type. Also, the old merry-go-round will be painted, the park’s perimeter wall will be modified, and asphalt will replace a concrete walkway.
The equipment will be bought from Moore Recreation & Park Equipment of Thousand Oaks, which will install it. To reduce costs, the city’s Public Works Department will help remove the old equipment.
Council members Clem L. Bartolai and MaryAnn L. MacGillivray voted against the project, expressing concern about budget worries and the use of redevelopment funds for such projects.
