Downey OKs No-Sports Rule at Cemetery

DOWNEY — The City Council has passed a law banning golf and other sports activities in the city cemetery.
The council acted Tuesday after receiving a complaint that a young boy was hitting golf balls in the Downey Cemetery at Lakewood Boulevard and Gardendale Street, Councilwoman Diane P. Boggs said.
“The family (of a person buried in the cemetery) was appalled, but there was no law on the books to prohibit it,” Boggs said. “Sometimes laws are unwritten, and you just have to sit down and write them.”
Violators could be charged with a misdemeanor and fined, officials said.
