Yacht Club Runs a Tight Ship in Tustin

Tustin, once known as the Beverly Hills of Orange County, finally has its own Yacht Club--an amicable full-service pub and restaurant where you can spend your shore leave. Owner Jack Morrell, who keeps things on an even keel seven days a week, chose the name because “it expresses the fun and humor we have here.”
Actually, the bar’s personality goes beyond its vigorous, friendly patrons (blue- and white-collar types, about 25 and older): The deep, dark wood makes you feel like you’re below decks of a 19th-Century clipper ship.
There are tables and booths to either side of the bar; a small bandstand and dance floor round out the accommodations. Karaoke is offered every night: You select a tune, it is played, and you do the singing. On Monday nights, there are $1 tacos and tequila.
But those patrons are the heart of the place. “It’s a neighborhood bar and everyone is friendly,” says Jan Roberts, one of the regulars. Sean Kelly, the boys’ and girls’ cross-country coach at Tustin High School, has been tending bar at the Club for 11 years and says, “It’s like getting paid to go to a party each night.”
Tustin Yacht Club, 14401 Newport Ave. (corner of McFadden Avenue), Tustin. Opens daily 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. (714) 544-1995.
