U.S. and Iraq

On the same day that Alexander Cockburn blamed the U.S. for the deplorable conditions in Iraq (“Can Political Gain Be Worth Such Suffering?” Column Left, Nov. 28), The Times reported that the Iraqi government itself was earning foreign currency but chose to spend that money not on the people of Iraq, but on necessities and luxuries for its military.
Cockburn’s suggestion that we facilitate Hussein’s rearming in the name of “compassion” for the people under his heel, and thereby hurry the day when he again turns his murderous intentions on his neighbors, would serve as a definition of the moral bankruptcy of the left.
