OUTLOOK
Heckel, now in his sixth season with the Mariners, has to replace all five starters from a team that finished second to Kennedy in league play. Two of them were all-league, forward Kevin Gaughen (24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds per game last season) and guard Larry Nagata (16.7 points per game). “It’s a rebuilding year,” Heckel said. “But I think by January we’ll be competitive.” What Heckel does have is depth in the backcourt, with five capable guards. Berner, who didn’t play much last season, assumes the point-guard duties and Vlasic figures to see a lot of action. “(Vlasic) is probably the best sophomore I’ve ever had,” Heckel said. “Chris really knows the game. He even posts up as well as anybody I’ve got.” However, that task belongs on a regular basis to Green, whom Heckel hopes will become more assertive. “He’s not quite as aggressive a center as I would like him to be, but he’s improving,” Heckel said. As usual, the Mariners will go with a full-court pressing defense. “We’ll do a lot of trapping,” Heckel said.
