United and Union Agree, Averting Strike: The airline’s machinists reached a tentative contract with the airline, avoiding a crippling holiday strike. Negotiators for the airline’s largest union agreed to keep 27,000 members on the job, said Ken Pheide, assistant general chairman of the International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. “Our negotiating committee is going to be recommending a yes vote,” Pheide said. United said both sides agreed not to release details of the tentative pact pending a union vote.
