Romania Voters Give Resounding Support to New Constitution

BUCHAREST, Romania — A new constitution containing guarantees of political and economic liberties took effect Friday, almost two years after the collapse of Romania’s Communist leadership.
Over the weekend, 77% of Romanians voted to give final approval to the document, according to a final ballot count released Friday.
Approval by a simple majority of the population was needed for the document to take effect. Parliament earlier had ratified the constitution.
The Parliament was elected in May, 1990, to adopt a new constitution. The body formally dissolved itself after the constitution was declared in effect.
But legislators will continue to carry out their duties until new general elections, expected in the spring. No date has yet been set.
