Kareem Says He Is Considering Ending Retirement to Help Magic

In a season that has seen almost everything else, how about the return of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar?
The former Laker great said Saturday on CBS’ “The NFL Today” that he is thinking of playing basketball again.
Abdul-Jabbar, 44, retired since the end of the 1989 playoffs, said he would evaluate his performance in his Feb. 28 one-on-one exhibition at an Atlantic City, N.J., casino against Julius Erving, the 41-year-old former 76er great who has been retired for four seasons.
If it’s good enough, Abdul-Jabbar said, he will consider returning.
Said Abdul-Jabbar: “It’s something that’s crossed my mind. When I heard the news about (Magic Johnson’s) HIV positive test, it really affected me, and I wanted to do something to help my friend. And the thing I do best is play basketball.”
Laker officials could not be reached for comment.
