Fine Arts Center Contract: Speaking of competitive bids, Pepper West Inc. of Irvine beat seven other contracting firms vying to construct a $17.9-million fine arts center at the California State University’s Los Angeles campus, but won its victory by the slimmest of margins.
“We beat the closest bidder by four-tenths of a percent,” said Pepper West spokesman Mark Thurman.
The 72,500-square-foot project will include a 1,171-seat auditorium and an outdoor amphitheater, connected by a plaza.
Construction just got underway and is scheduled for completion in January, 1994. Pepper West is a subsidiary of Pepper Cos. Inc., based in Chicago.
