Free Christmas trees donated by a local tree farm will make a merrier holiday this year for 400 needy families.
The Olde Tyme Christmas Tree Farm, at 1515 N. Main St., will give away 400 Monterey pines between 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday.
Mark Winn, owner of the tree farm, said the seasonal giveaway tradition began about eight years ago, when trees that hadn’t been purchased were donated as a community service.
Each year, families who have been referred by local charities receive trees ranging from tabletop size to 12 feet tall.
Families must have stationery, a business card or other identification from a charity to be eligible for a tree, Winn said.
“They just show up with the letterhead and pick out a tree, and we’ll cut it for them and fix them up,” Winn said.
