BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Sunny Hills’ Free Throws Key Victory in 2 Overtimes

Sunny Hills outlasted Brea-Olinda, 68-65, in double overtime in the championship quarterfinal round of the Brea-Olinda boys’ basketball tournament Friday in Brea.
Terry Mann had 30 points and Mario Bertuol had 25 for Sunny Hills, which plays Troy at 7 tonight in a semifinal game.
Brea forced overtime when Morgan Brown made a basket to tie the score, 52-52, as time ran out. Scott Hole also scored in the final seconds of the first overtime to tie the score, 61-61.
Sunny Hills made 22 of 26 free throws. Brea plays La Mirada at 4 p.m. in a fifth-place semifinal round game.
In other Brea-Olinda tournament games:
Troy 65, La Mirada 64 (OT)--Guard Randy Abbott scored 22 points, including three three-point shots, to lead Troy in overtime. Teammate Jim Falletta had 11 points.
El Dorado 80, Whittier Christian 69--Brent D’Arc scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds, and Mike Johnson added 18 points for El Dorado (5-5) in the consolation bracket. Jeff Rutter scored 28 points and Mark Berokoff 24 for Whittier Christian.
La Habra 61, Los Altos 60--Cinque Brown scored 29 points for La Habra (4-6). Center Rusty Volkert had 15 points for the Highlanders. Richard Victorio scored 20 points for Los Altos, including five three-pointers.
In the Del Mar Torrey Pines Above the Rim Tournament:
Mater Dei 94, University San Diego High School 34--Reggie Geary scored 14 points as the Monarchs had little trouble winning in the championship second round. Mater Dei led, 24-2, at the end of the first quarter and 48-14 at the half.
Los Alamitos 88, Texas Red Bluff 46--Jason Cunningham had 20 points and Steve Carbone made three three-pointers on his way to 17 points in the consolation round. Cunningham also grabbed six rebounds for Los Alamitos (4-6).
In the Atascardo Tournament:
Valencia 71, San Clemente 54--Adolfo Gomez led Valencia in scoring and rebounds with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Teammate Tony Draft had 15 points. Valencia is 6-2.
In the Canyon Tournament:
Canyon 53, Bolsa Grande 50--Senior center Tony Walker scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds as the Comanches (4-6) rallied from a six-point deficit midway through the second period to win the consolation quarterfinal game.
Bolsa Grande center Jason Deinhart led all scorers with 24 points. Bolsa Grande dropped to 0-7. The Matadors face the loser of the Montebello-Ridgecrest Burroughs game at 9 a.m. today, and Canyon meets the winner of the Montebello-Burroughs game in the consolation semifinals at 2 p.m.
Santa Margarita 102, Temecula Valley 84--Forward Dan Bathey had 24 points, including three three-pointers, for Santa Margarita in a championship quarterfinal round game.
Teammate Mike Carpenter, who also hit three three-pointers, had 18 points. Jerry Evans had 27 points for Temecula Valley.
In the Torrance tournament:
Rancho Alamitos 76, Lawndale Leuzinger 67--Neravanh Phonexay and Ed Taylor of Rancho Alamitos opened up in the third quarter, scoring 18 of the team’s 28 third-quarter points, in a consolation semifinal game.
Phonexay was the leading scorer with 22, followed by Taylor, who hit four three-pointers and scored 21 points. Rancho Alamitos is 1-4 and will play South Torrance at 4:30 p.m. today. In the Mountain View St. Francis tournament:
University 71, Sunnyvale Fremont 54--Guard Luis Venegas scored 20 points and had a school-record 11 steals for University (5-7). Teammate Ben Durham had 16 points and 8 assists.
University led 51-50, with 5minutes remaining in the game. The Trojans then outscored Fremont (6-6), 20-4, to end the game.
