Background Check for Gun Owners

Was it coincidental that your Jan. 19 issue contained both Paul Ruffins’ excellent piece on the black community’s changing stance on gun control (Opinion) and also reported the response time for the Los Angeles Police Department?
Seven minutes to respond to a life-threatening situation is as good as no response at all. A body can bleed to death in seven minutes. A rapist can complete his foul act in seven minutes. A car full of gang punks can be miles away from their drive-by shooting in seven minutes.
The members of the black community who are now coming out in support of firearms ownership have recognized the sad reality of contemporary law enforcement. The police cannot protect us. What is left when only the bad guys have guns? Washington, D.C.?
