The Navy will transfer two fighter squadrons from Virginia to Miramar Naval Air Station, it was announced Tuesday.
Rep. Randy (Duke) Cunningham (R-San Diego) said the move will be effective in March and will involve the transfer of 518 military personnel to San Diego.
Cunningham said the transfers will provide a boost to the local economy, because the new personnel will bring with them about $13.3 million in annual salaries.
The squadrons, VF-11 and VF-31, fly F-14 Tomcat fighters and were previously attached to Carrier Air Wing Six, at the Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach, Va.
