WOMEN’S BOWLING : Hentges Surprise Leader at Open

Kansas City police officer Kathy Hentges, 33 and expecting her first child in September, emerged as the surprise leader of the U.S. Open Tuesday night at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley.
Hentges, who bowls part time as a regional pro in Kansas City, averaged 231 Tuesday on games of 204, 264, 239, 244, 181, 247, 215 and 256.
Hentges leads by 53 pins in this field of 192 of the 60-game, six-day event. Her pursuers include Cheryl Daniels, Leanne Barrette, Wendy Macpherson, Nikki Gianulias, Rene Fleming and Anne Marie Duggan. Fleming and Janelle Poodry of Fullerton each rolled 300s.
