Orange Lutheran stepped up its defense in the fourth quarter to put away Calvary Chapel, 86-81, Friday in a second-round Southern Section Division IV-A playoff game.
Orange Lutheran will play Burbank Bell-Jeff, a 83-62 winner over Ventura St. Bonaventure, in the quarterfinals Friday.
Calvary Chapel (17-6) was the one playing at a frenzied pace for much of the first half, led by Sabe Younger, who finished with 23 points and 16 rebounds. The Eagles held a 40-33 lead with just under four minutes to play in the second quarter, but the Lancers (15-12) went on an 11-point run to move ahead.
Fortunately for everyone--referees and scorekeepers in particular--the game was decided by more than three points. At halftime, the scoreboard showed Orange Lutheran leading, 48-46. But the score book included a field goal that officials seemed to have disallowed on the floor and a point for a free throw that actually was found after the game to have been missed. After much discussion, officials decided to go with the book and a 51-46 score.
The teams were tied for the final time at 76-76 with 2:32 to play before Orange Lutheran pulled away by five in the final minute.
Orange Lutheran’s leading scorers were Lenny Gavin and Rod Sherman with 18 points.
