Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia and Italy’s Omar Camporese suffered surprise straight-set defeats Wednesday in the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament at Rotterdam.
Dutchman Paul Haarhuis defeated the third-seeded Lendl, 6-1, 7-5, in a second-round match, and Sweden’s Jan Apell beat No. 4 Camporese, 6-4, 6-2, in an opening-round match.
Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden faced more resistance than expected from Germany’s Patrick Baur, but eventually won a first-round encounter, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
John McEnroe, seeded sixth, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory over David Prinosil of Germany.
In the day’s major upset, Lendl, ranked No. 8 in the world, failed to make any headway against Haarhuis’ consistently accurate returns and passing shots.
“I played good tennis. I kept my head and didn’t give him a chance to get back into the match,” Haarhuis, 36th in the world, said.
Lendl declined to be interviewed.
Peruvian Jaime Yzaga ended Jimmy Connors’ bid for another tournament title Tuesday night at Scottsdale, Ariz., with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory in the $260,000 Purex Tennis Championships.
Andre Agassi, the second-seeded player, took only 59 minutes to beat Spain’s Francisco Clavet, 6-2, 6-1, in the last of the day’s nine singles matches.
Neither Connors’ fans nor his railing at judgment calls could prevent his third consecutive loss to Yzaga.
“I thought I hit the ball pretty well. Sometimes I misfired,” said Connors, who hasn’t won on the Tour since 1989.
