Shoe industry giant Reebok International has acquired Above The Rim, a San Diego-based company that markets apparel and accessories for basketball players. No purchase price was given. Closely held Above The Rim reported $3 million in 1991 revenue.
Above The Rim apparel will become a separate operating unit of Reebok’s sports division, and the Above The Rim trademark will appear on a new collection of basketball shoes designed for indoor use.
Reebok, the nation’s No. 2 basketball shoe manufacturer behind Nike, will incorporate the Above The Rim logo into its new line of shoes.
Above The Rim was founded in 1989 by Bob Capener, a former basketball All-American at Brigham Young University. The company will remain in San Diego.
Capener, sole owner of Above The Rim, will become director of basketball products at Reebok’s corporate headquarters in Stoughton, Mass. Capener will be responsible for all of the company’s basketball products, including Above The Rim apparel and footwear.
Sean Fox will remain in Southern California as director of operations for Reebok’s Above The Rim apparel unit.
