Farm Equipment Maker Cuts Back: The recession is forcing FMC Corp. to lay off 30 more people at its farm equipment manufacturing plant in Madera, Calif., on May 1, officials announced. Those furloughed, mostly office workers, represent 10% of the division’s 300 employees. Said Gary A. Wells, operations director: “The reduction . . . is due to the lingering economic conditions and a very weak tomato market in California.” The Madera plant manufactures tomato harvesters as well as tree-shakers, rotary and hydraulic sterilizers and other fruit and vegetable equipment. Fifteen FMC employees were laid off in November.
