A 19-year-old Monterey Park gang member was sentenced Thursday to life in prison for his role in the Feb. 24 gang shooting that injured two people at The Plaza shopping mall in West Covina.
Richard Ramos did not contest charges of attempted murder and shooting into an occupied building when he appeared in court March 19. Under sentencing rules, he will be eligible for parole after serving seven years in prison.
A second gunman, Edmund Luera, 17, of Monrovia faces an April 24 court hearing to determine whether he will be tried as an adult. Police said the two fired 15 bullets into the mall at 6:30 p.m. during a clash with rival gang members. The gunfire sent dozens of shoppers fleeing for cover. A 45-year-old shopper and a 19-year-old gang member were wounded.
