Australian Kieren Perkins broke the world men’s 400-meter freestyle record with a time of 3 minutes 46.47 seconds in the Australian Open championships at Canberra. The previous mark of 3:46.95 was set by German Uwe Dassler of East Germany at the Seoul Olympics in 1988.
