FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A religious sect leader charged in the deaths of 14 people testified Wednesday that his teachings were not intended to cause hatred--especially racial hatred of “white devils.”
Yahweh ben Yahweh, who is charged with murder conspiracy, said he never intended his teachings to inspire violence.
“I feel remorseful about anyone who has lost his life,” Yahweh testified. “I feel especially sorry for the families. When I entered the military, I chose to go into the Air Force so I wouldn’t have to kill anyone. As a prince of peace I look for peace on this Earth for all people.”
Yahweh, 56, who says he is the son of God, and 15 members of his group are on trial in federal court for slayings that prosecutors say were intended to further his religious empire.
