Joe Hicks, formerly of Modesto College, has signed a letter of intent with the Cal State Northridge men’s track team, and Maureen Batiste of Long Beach Poly High has signed with the Matador women’s basketball team.
Hicks, who has competed unattached this season, placed third in the hammer throw and sixth in the shotput in last year’s state junior college championships as a Modesto sophomore.
He has personal bests of 190 feet in the hammer, 155-0 in the discus and 54-0 in the shotput.
Batiste, a 6-foot-2 center, averaged 10 points and seven rebounds last season, shooting 52% from the field.
In other Northridge news, Victor Camper, a 6-8 1/2 center who played for Long Beach City College from 1989-91, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge after committing to the school last month.
Camper, who sat out last season while completing his requirements for an associate of arts degree, helped Long Beach to a runner-up finish in the 1991 state junior college tournament by averaging 14.0 points and 8.8 rebounds a game.
He is the fifth player--and fourth from the junior college ranks--to sign to play for Northridge next season.
