Eighty police officers raided more than a dozen homes in three cities Thursday, arresting five suspected gang members or associates and seizing several weapons, police said.

Police in Orange, Westminster and Anaheim served search warrants at 14 homes during the early morning raids, said Lt. Trey Sirks of the Orange Police Department, which coordinated the investigation.

“There was no resistance, no injuries, no problem,” Sirks said.

The raids were part of an investigation into the shooting at two Orange police officers and a county probation officer in a patrol car on the night of May 9, Sirks said. One shot, apparently fired from an apartment building, pierced the car’s radiator, but there were no injuries. The incident occurred in the 800 block of North Olive Avenue, Sirks said.

At about 7 a.m., police began searching 11 homes in Orange, two in Anaheim and one in Westminster. Investigators declined to release the addresses of those homes, citing their continuing investigation into the shooting, Sirks said.

Sirks said investigators seized several handguns, a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition at the homes.

In Westminster, about eight plainclothes police officers surrounded the Essex Circle home of Michael Caudle, according to a neighbor who did not want to give her name. After showing search warrant papers to a woman who answered the door, several officers entered the home, the neighbor said.

“You could hear them inside when they got to his room: ‘This is the police. Open up,’ ” she said.

Caudle, 18, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, Sirks said. Caudle was one of four teen-agers arrested shortly after the May 9 shooting in Orange but was released pending further investigation, police said. New evidence in the case led to his arrest Thursday, but investigators declined to elaborate.

Andrew Guzman, 18, of Orange was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a May 6 shooting that left a man in the 500 block of North Olive Street wounded.

Patrick DeHerrera, 26, was arrested in his North Lemon Street home on suspicion of possession of a sawed-off shotgun, Sirks said.

Two youths, aged 15 and 17, were arrested in Orange on suspicion of probation violation and threats to a peace officer, Sirks said. Their names were not released because they are juveniles.

Sirks identified all five suspects as gang members or associates. However, he declined to say if they were associated with same gang.

The three adults were booked at Orange County Jail in Santa Ana. Bail for Caudle and Guzman was set at $250,000 each. Bail for DeHerrera was set at $10,000.

The juveniles were being held in Orange County Juvenile Hall in Orange, Sirks said.
