Hurdlers Demond Smith of Hawthorne High, Charlie Davidson of Santa Ana Valley and Keith Moten of Los Angeles Loyola will continue their season-long rivalry today in the opening day of the two-day state prep track and field meet at Cerritos College.
Field events begin today at 3 p.m. and running events at 5. Saturday’s start times are 2 and 4 p.m.
Smith, Davidson and Moten have taken turns beating one another all spring.
In last week’s Southern Section Masters’ meet, Smith won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles and finished second to Davidson in the 110-meter high hurdles. The California-bound Moten, who won the 4-A Division title in both hurdles events, finished a close third in both races.
Other performers to watch include two-time girls’ defending state 100- and 200-meter champion Marion Jones of Thousand Oaks in the sprints and relays; Twila Sims of Lompoc in the 100- and 300-meter low hurdles; Angel Martinez of San Gabriel in the 3,200 meters and Bryan Woodward of Long Beach Poly in the 800.
