Mater Dei Summer Tournament Begins Today at Two Locations

Mater Dei, the defending Southern California Regional Division I champion, is top-seeded in the 32-team Mater Dei summer basketball tournament that begins today at two sites.
Mater Dei returns starters Marmet Williams, Miles Simon, Terence Wilborn and Kamran Sufi from last year’s team that finished 34-2 and was runner-up to Alameda St. Joseph in the State Division I championship.
Second-seeded Capistrano Valley returns starting point guard Dave Sedgwick from last year’s team that finished 30-4 and lost to Mater Dei in the regional final.
The four-day tournament features some of the top players in Southern California, including center Alex Lopez (North Hollywood Campbell Hall), center Leif Nelson (Riverside Arlington), guard Jimmy Harris (Ocean View), guard Jameel Mahmud (West Covina), forward Zerrick Campbell (Long Beach Poly), guard Ed Gray (Riverside J.W. North), forward Jim Faulkner (Estancia) and guard Jacque Vaughn (Pasadena Muir).
Games will be played at Mater Dei and Ocean View high gymnasiums. The championship game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at Ocean View.
The first-round pairings:
At Mater Dei: 8 a.m.--Los Amigos vs. University; 9:30--J.W. North vs. Estancia; 11--Western vs. Mater Dei JVs; 12:30 p.m.--Capistrano Valley vs. Savanna; 2--Ontario vs. Mission Viejo; 3:30--Long Beach Poly vs. Tustin; 5--Serra vs. Cypress; 6:30--Mater Dei vs. Campbell Hall; 8--Peninsula vs. Los Alamitos.
At Ocean View: 11 a.m.--Pasadena vs. Crespi; 12:30 p.m.--Simi Valley vs. West Covina; 2--Santa Clara vs. Bishop Montgomery; 3:30--Muir vs. Santa Ana Valley; 5--Ocean View vs. Inglewood.
