When I read Mike Downey’s article on the middle-distance runner Suzy Favor Hamilton (July 9), I realized that you had no clue of how sexist the article actually is. So I thought I would help you out. I changed Suzy Favor Hamilton to Sam Favor Hamilton. Please read the article now from start to finish and honestly ask yourself if you would ever used such a patronizing, condescending, “cutesyfying” tone for a male athlete.
I am still waiting for the day when the Los Angeles Times will:
1) Give female athletes the coverage they deserve and
2) Treat female athletes with courtesy and respect.
As of today, we are nowhere near that day.
