The Los Angeles Unified School District is seeking new members for its commission on special education.
The commission, established 13 years ago, advises the Board of Education on educational and employment programs and services for people with disabilities.
Of the district’s 640,000 students during the past school year, about 57,000 children participated in special education programs on regular school campuses, with an additional 5,000 youngsters enrolled in schools designed for children with severe handicaps.
The Special Education Commission is one of seven panels created to represent the concerns of various groups within the district. Members of the commission, which meets monthly, include parents, teachers and community representatives.
Nine vacancies are to be filled by Aug. 31. Those interested may obtain more information from the commission office by calling (213) 625-6066.
