TAKEMITSU: “To the Edge of Dream”; Folios for Guitar; “Toward the Sea”; Four Transcriptions; “Vers, l’arc-en-ciel, Palma.” John Williams, guitar; Sebastian Bell, alto flute; Gareth Hulse, oboe d’amore; London Sinfonietta, conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. Sony Classical SK 46720. The framing works here are mini-concertos, long on characteristic coloration and lonely poignancy, emotionally reflective yet tautly organized. Williams and Salonen project them with sensitive, pastel flair. Hulse adds a quiet virtuosity almost lost in its subtlety to “Vers, l’arc-en-ciel, Palma,” and Bell is effectively supple with Williams in the more abstract sound-scapes of “Toward the Sea.” Williams plays the demanding solos--which are becoming welcome recital staples--carefully and sympathetically.
