The Glendale Redevelopment Agency on Tuesday hired Turner Construction Co. of Los Angeles as general contractor for the renovation and conversion of the historic Alex Theatre into a performing arts center.
The company’s special projects division specializes in building renovations and was responsible for several theater projects, including restoration of the Wiltern Theatre and Art Deco office tower in the mid-Wilshire District in 1985.
Construction on the theater, at 216 N. Brand Blvd., is scheduled to begin Sept. 7 with completion expected by July 15, 1993. Although the city has set aside $6.2 million for the project, the actual construction cost has not yet been determined, officials said.
