USD hired Mike Haupt, a former player, as assistant men’s basketball coach on Wednesday.
Haupt, who played under Coach Hank Egan between 1986 and 1988, will join the USD staff later this month.
As a junior in 1987-88, Haupt started 17 consecutive games and was the team’s leading rebounder before injuring a knee. The injury ended his playing career.
Haupt graduated in 1989 with a degree in business, worked as Egan’s graduate assistant during 1989-90 and as assistant director of operations the past three years. He earned his masters in 1991 from USD’s School of Education.
Haupt, an alumnus of Mira Mesa High, where he earned Section Player of the Year honors in 1984, replaces Todd Lee, who recently left for the Continental Basketball Assn.
