PREP PREVIEW ’92 / WATER POLO : SAN CLEMENTE
- Share via
Coach: Steve Yancey (12th year).
1991: 27-4, 3-2 in league; defeated Capistrano Valley, 9-5, to win the 4-A championship; finished third in South Coast League.
Key returners: Bryce Matthews, Sr., All-Division 4-A first team; Tim Hornig, Sr., All-Division 4-A second team; Todd Pelkey, Sr., All-Division 4-A third team; Jeff Suckiel, Sr.; Phinney Gardner, Jr., two-meter defender; Matt Frauenzimmer, Sr.; Morgan Itzel, Sr., goalkeeper.
Key newcomers: Kade Boisseranc, Sr.; Marc Staudenbaur, Jr.; Gabriel Gardner, So., goalkeeper.
Outlook: Despite the graduation of Jeremy Laster, 4-A player of the year, and second-leading scorer Sean Lane, Yancey says this team has comparable talent. However, his biggest worry is that the Tritons will “sit back on our laurels.” Another worry is that Pelkey has an injured right wrist that might keep him out until early October. Gardner, who is 6 feet 5, looks promising as Laster’s replacement at two-meter guard, but the two players who will share time at goalie are inexperienced.
