David Andrade of Hueneme High, Larry Bumpus of Oxnard and Donald DiDomizio of Rio Mesa--all Channel League quarterbacks--each rushed for more than 100 yards in their season debuts last weekend. Sure, they were overshadowed by Buena running back George Keiaho--also of the Channel League--who rushed for a Ventura County-record 415 yards and five touchdowns against Westlake. But the trio combined to outrush Keiaho by four yards and match his five touchdowns.
DiDomizio, a junior, rushed for 192 yards and two touchdowns in Rio Mesa’s 26-12 loss to Channel Islands; Bumpus, a senior, rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns in Oxnard’s 16-0 win over Arroyo Grande; Andrade, a senior who accounted for 325 yards in Hueneme’s 35-20 loss to Newbury Park, rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown.
Passing: Junior Keith Smith of Newbury Park set a school record with 327 yards passing against Hueneme. Smith completed 19 of 27 and broke his own record of 318 yards set last season. . . . Simi Valley quarterback Eric Bennett threw for 277 yards in a 24-19 loss to Ventura, the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. Bennett also has the top three performances, including a school-record 342 last season against Newbury Park.
Poly quarterback Anthony Muse completed only one of eight passes against Belmont but it went for a 22-yard touchdown to Patrick Reed.
Rushing: Littlerock backs averaged better than six yards a carry against Serrano, rushing for 262 yards. . . . North Hollywood nearly doubled last year’s offensive yardage average in its win over Narbonne. The Huskies, who averaged 66 yards a game in 1991, gained 130.
Village Christian running back Tarik Blair could have gained 205 yards if not for penalties. He was credited with 115, but five of the Crusaders’ seven offensive penalties occurred on Blair runs. . . . St. Francis sophomore running back Chris McAlister bounced back from four first-half fumbles in his varsity debut. He did not fumble in the second half and gained 92 yards in the game.
Offense: Not that anyone noticed, but Westlake rolled up 451 yards Friday in a 42-30 loss to Buena that featured Keiaho’s sensational performance. Buena amassed 638 yards. Also overshadowed by Keiaho was Westlake running back Jason Bedell, who rushed for 164 yards in 24 carries.
How does St. Francis gain 282 yards and score only eight points? Four fumbles and 135 yards in penalties had something to do with it. “It was as frustrating a night as I’ve ever had in my coaching career,” Coach Andy Boynton said.
Quartz Hill Coach John Albee need look only at last week’s rushing statistics against Lompoc to know that it probably will be a long year. Quartz Hill averaged 176 yards rushing a game in 1991 and 246 in 1990. The Rebels netted minus-six yards rushing in a 21-0 loss to Lompoc.
Defense: North Hollywood gave up only 17 yards to Narbonne last week. The Huskies gave up an average of 300 yards a game in 1991. . . . Notre Dame end Brandon Gabriel had five tackles and two sacks in the Knights’ 14-7 win over Alemany on Friday.
Kicking: Kennedy’s Jeremy Deach averaged 40.7 yards on six punts last week, including one of 58.
Girls’ volleyball: Jenny Pavley had eight kills to help Agoura beat Capistrano Valley in the final of the San Luis Obispo tournament Saturday.
Statistics complete through Monday.
