East L.A. Prison

I’d like to express my appreciation to Msgr. John Moretta for his column (Commentary, Sept. 17).
I recall growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods--known as Maravilla--in the heart of East L.A. My father, a cabinet maker, and my mother, a homemaker, kept their six children safe and secure despite the negative element in our community.
Today, I continue to live in East L.A. as a single parent raising my 9-year-old daughter. I, too, try to keep her in a safe home environment. We followed the fight against the prison as a family project.
Again, I want to thank Msgr. Moretta, the Mothers of East L.A. and all who participated in (fighting) what we believed was wrong for our community.
