A National City man whose home had already been burglarized in the past week shot and killed a man who broke in through a bedroom window Thursday, police said.
Juan Manuel Gonzalez of the 1800 block of B Avenue was home alone when he heard someone breaking in through his child’s bedroom window about 10:20 a.m., a police spokeswoman said.
He armed himself with a gun, confronted the man in the living room and tried to detain him while he called police. But Gonzalez told police that the man grabbed a vase and tried to hit him.
Gonzalez fired several shots at the man, who staggered outside and collapsed on a nearby lawn. He was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he died about 11:40 a.m.
The man carried no identification, and police are trying to identify him by his tattoos.
Gonzalez was taken in for questioning by police, but no charges have been filed against him. Police say his house was burglarized in the past week and that electronic equipment was stolen.
The case will be submitted to the district attorney’s office for routine review, police said.
