Before David Cone’s two singles Sunday, American League pitchers were two for 108 in the World Series since the designated hitter was adopted in 1973. AL pitchers were hitless in 10 at-bats since Mike Moore doubled on Oct. 28, 1989, in Game 4 of Oakland’s World Series against the San Francisco Giants. Cone was six for 65 with four runs batted in with the New York Mets this season. His run batted in Sunday was the first for a pitcher in the World Series since Moore’s two-run double on Oct. 28, 1989.
