COMMUNITY COLLEGE NOTEBOOK / STEVE KRESAL : Only One Is Standing in Chrishon’s Way

Had Marcellus Chrishon of Saddleback College gone to any other Orange County community college, he would already be close to being the school’s all-time rusher.

Unfortunately for Chrishon, Saddleback was the home of Toby Whipple, Orange County’s most prolific rusher. He gained 3,088 yards for the Gauchos in the 1969 and 1970 seasons.

Despite Chrishon’s great speed and determination, Whipple’s numbers seem almost out of sight with three regular-season games left. Chrishon has rushed for 1,304 yards this season and has 2,214 in his career.

Saddleback (7-0) figures to get a bowl bid, but even with a fourth game Chrishon would need to average 219 yards per game to pass Whipple.

Chrishon’s yardage total is fifth-best in county history. Whipple heads the list, followed by Golden West’s Blaise Bryant, who had 2,492 yards in 1987-88. Rancho Santiago’s Estrus Crayton, who had 2,452 yards between 1989-90, is third and Fullerton’s Jeff Andrews (2,403 yards in 1988-89) is fourth.

Saddleback quarterback Tim Snowden is also moving up the all-time lists. He passed for 266 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to rally Saddleback to a 16-12 victory over San Diego Mesa and moved into the top spot in yards and touchdowns at Saddleback.

He has passed for 3,741 yards and 30 touchdowns in his career at Saddleback. Snowden needs 399 yards to move ahead of Golden West’s John Heinle, who holds the top spot in Orange County. Heinle passed for 4,139 yards in 1983-84.

Snowden is third in county history in touchdown passes. Fullerton’s Dick Hough (1964-65) is first with 39 and Heinle had 36.

Southland poll: Saddleback remains the No. 1 team in the Southland Poll this week. The Gauchos have a bye this week and return Nov. 7 in a Mission Conference Central Division game at Orange Coast.

Pasadena (7-0) is second, Mt. San Antonio (6-1) third, El Camino (5-1) fourth, San Bernardino Valley (6-0-1) fifth, Los Angeles Harbor (6-0) sixth, Palomar (5-1) seventh, Moorpark (5-0-1) eighth, Glendale (5-1) ninth and Bakersfield (4-1-1) 10th.

More polls: The cross-county coaches in Southern California have started a weekly poll and the Riverside men’s team is ranked No. 1. El Camino is second, Mt. San Antonio third, San Diego Mesa fourth, Long Beach fifth, Ventura sixth, Fullerton seventh, Antelope Valley eighth, Glendale ninth and San Bernardino Valley 10th.

On the women’s side, Mt. San Antonio is first and Irvine Valley second. The two teams tied for the State title last season.

Long Beach is third, El Camino fourth, Antelope Valley fifth, Rio Hondo sixth, Ventura seventh, Glendale eighth, Rancho Santiago ninth and San Diego Mesa 10th.

Most of the teams in Southern California will compete Saturday in the Moorpark Invitational. The men’s invitational is at 11:40 a.m. and the women’s race is at 12:20 p.m.

National record: When El Camino’s Ivan Wilson rang up six touchdowns Saturday against Orange Coast, he set a Mission Conference record and tied the state record for touchdowns in a game set by O.J. Simpson in 1965 for City College of San Francisco.

But the state record was not only tied Saturday, it also was broken. John Fisher, a freshman running back, scored seven times (six rushing and one receiving) as Shasta beat College of the Redwoods, 49-28.

Wrestling: Brian Tomazic of Rancho Santiago, James Lopez of Cypress and Mike Bolster of Golden West will compete in the North/South state wrestling tournament Saturday in Fresno. Tomazic, who was fourth in the state as a heavyweight last season, will wrestle at 190 pounds.

Lopez, who is the younger brother of former Cypress State champion Sam Lopez, wrestles at 126 pounds. Bolster is 12-1 as a heavyweight.

Water polo: Golden West and Long Beach will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at the Belmont Plaza pool in a match to decide the regular-season South Coast Conference championship.

But it’s the first of a month of championship weekends at Long Beach. The South Coast Conference tournament is Nov. 6-7, the Southern California championships are Nov. 13-14 and the State tournament is Nov. 20-21.

Moving on up: Fullerton College announced Monday that the Hornets would play their final two home football game at Cal State Fullerton instead of at Fullerton District Stadium.
