No. 5-ranked Texas A&M; did what it does best--run the football--and the result was a 41-7 victory over Southern Methodist Saturday at Dallas.
Greg Hill rushed for 138 yards and two touchdowns in 24 carries and Rodney Thomas had 78 yards and three touchdowns in 17.
“We didn’t turn the ball over, make any mistakes and played four quarterbacks,” offensive coordinator Bob Toledo said. “We ran the ball very well. That’s our bread and butter.”
The Aggies, 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the Southwest Conference, won their 17th consecutive regular-season game and 12th straight in SWC action. SMU dropped to 3-5 and 1-4.
For Hill, who attended nearby Dallas Carter High School, it was a good homecoming. He had 21 family members watching from the Cotton Bowl stands.
“It was great to have a big game with them in the stadium,” Hill said. “I had a couple of fumbles in the Cotton Bowl last year, but that jinx is over now.”
No. 25 Texas 44, Texas Tech 33--The days of winning with defense at Texas appear to be over. The Longhorns are simply outscoring opponents.
Adrian Walker rushed for 155 yards in 16 carries and Peter Gardere and Phil Brown each scored two touchdowns in this high-scoring SWC affair at Lubbock, Tex.
Texas (5-2, 3-0) rolled up 337 rushing yards.
Last week, Texas won a 45-38 shootout with Houston but yielded more than 700 yards. They gave up 417 yards against Texas Tech.
The Longhorns, who just last year had the No. 3 defense in the nation, are last defensively in the SWC this season.
Texas knocked the Red Raiders (3-5, 2-2) out of the SWC race.
The Longhorns took control on fourth-quarter touchdown runs of two and 11 yards by Gardere, who completed 17 of 35 passes for 212 yards with two interceptions. Gardere’s second score, with 3:29 left, and gave Texas a 44-27 lead.
Tech’s Lloyd Hill caught 10 passes for 151 yards and has 115 catches for his career, breaking the school record of 107 set by Donny Anderson in 1965. He scored on plays of 30, 13 and seven yards, all on passes from Jason Clemons.
