A San Bernardino man was in stable condition Sunday night after he was found lying near the parking lot of La Palma Intercommunity Hospital with a large kitchen knife stuck in his chest, police said.
The man, 30-year-old Stan James Keyes, was rushed to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he underwent emergency surgery.
Police said employees of the La Palma hospital called 911 about 3 p.m. to report that a man was lying near the parking lot, which is shared by the hospital and a medical office building.
Paramedics from the Orange County Fire Department treated Keyes at the scene before transporting him to the UCI Medical Center trauma unit.
A police spokeswoman said investigators are treating the incident as a possible attempted murder. They have not determined a motive, and police have not been able to interview the victim, she said.
