Blacks and Democrats

Dermot D. Givens (Platform, Nov. 12) complains that presidents since Eisenhower have filled African-Americans with hope, then left them shut out from democracy. But African-Americans did not vote for many of these presidents. Regardless of the candidates or the issues, African-Americans have consistently voted for Democrats.
Since African-Americans are willing to be such loyal lap dogs for the Democrats, the Democrats have no need to do anything to earn the African-American vote. Likewise, any effort by any other party to woo African-American voters is a waste of time.
African-Americans will get real political power when they stop rubber-stamping Democratic candidates and vote for the best candidate.
