POMONA : Don’t Hesitate to Warn of Quakes, Officials Urged

Several hundred state and local emergency officials meeting in Pomona were told Tuesday that there should be no hesitancy in giving advance public warnings of quakes whenever experts believe they are warranted.
Sociologist Dennis Mileti said studies have shown that some groups, such as young people and women, are more likely to heed the warnings than others, such as the elderly and men, and the most effective day of the week to issue them is Friday.
The meeting was held one day after scientists reported that the likelihood of a major earthquake in the region has grown significantly.
