Former lightweight champion Pernell Whitaker knocked out Benny Baez 37 seconds into the first round of their nontitle welterweight fight at Virginia Beach, Va.
It was Whitaker’s first fight as a welterweight. Whitaker (31-1) holds the International Boxing Federation junior welterweight title. He fought as a lightweight for seven years.
