PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Vallely Leads Newport Harbor Past Brea-Olinda

Eric Vallely had 31 points to help Newport Harbor to a 68-62 victory over Brea-Olinda in the first round of the Daily Pilot Tip-Off Classic boys’ basketball tournament Tuesday.
Teammate Ramy Shoukry had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Sailors (1-0), who rallied from a three-point halftime deficit. Wayne Spurlock had 15 points and Doug Horspool 14 for Brea-Olinda (0-1).
In other Tip-Off games:
Marina 70, Torrance 68--Matt Keim made six three-pointers and scored 24 points for Marina (1-0). Teammate Vlad Nieto had 16 points. Michael Dean had 25 points for Torrance (0-1).
Irvine 69, Sonora 49--Eric Ambrozich and Jim French led the scoring for Irvine (1-0) with 23 and 21 points, respectively. Chris St. Clair and Peter Lythgoe each had 18 points for Sonora (0-1).
Mater Dei 92, Foothill 35--Miles Simon scored 19 points and David Drakeford added 16 for Mater Dei (1-0). Jared Winger had 17 points for Foothill (0-1).
In the Savanna/Western boys’ tournament:
Katella 59, Savanna 41--Brian Carlson had 27 points and 13 rebounds for Katella.
Tustin 64, Rancho Alamitos 48--Rod Scheuerman had 17 points and DeJuan Matthews 14 for Tustin.
In nonleague boys’ play:
Laguna Beach 76, San Clemente 65--Reserve Corey French had 16 points and three steals and Trigg Garner had 12 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the visiting Artists (1-0).
Trabuco Hills 63, Mission Viejo 55--Brett Poulos had 19 points and Ryan Karnoff added 15 for host Trabuco Hills. Jeff Carr scored 28 for the Diablos.
In the Irvine girls’ tournament:
Dana Hills 59, Huntington Beach 48--Adara Newidouski and Karun Grossman led Dana Hills to its victory with 20 and 19 points, respectively. Clare Walker had 24 points for Huntington Beach.
Brea-Olinda 64, Tustin 19--Colleen Hudson had 16 points and Lee Moulin added 13 for the Ladycats, who led, 20-2, after the first quarter.
In nonleague girls’ play:
Villa Park 72, Anaheim 21--Maureen Skehan led Villa Park (1-0) with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate Tara Earl contributed 12 points and had nine steals. Maribel Rogue had 15 points for Anaheim (0-1).
Los Alamitos 54, Western 48--Kristin Reyes had 12 points and Cindy Yamasaki 10 for visiting Los Alamitos (1-0). Yamasaki broke the school’s career-scoring record. She now has 835 points, surpassing the 828 Allison Arredondo scored in two seasons.
